It is the heart of your heating System and has been designed to give you many years of clean, effi- cient trouble-free service. Howev- er, like all of us, there may come a time when your furnace needs a little doctoring, and whether you have forced air or a hot water system, some well-timed first-aid maintenance will give you many more years of summerlike com- fort. Some of this maintenance you can do yourself. Like cleaning the furnace filter at least twice during the heating season. Or keeping the electric motor and fan bearings lubricated, if called for by the manufacturer. You can also increase your fur- nace efficiency by keeping fur- niture, rugs and drapes out of the way of warm air ducts so as not to LAA fon ‘Brings a store to your door... impede the flow of heat into the room, or by closing the fireplace damper when not in use, and by making sure you have adequate — at least R20 insulation — in your attic to prevent heat loss. You should also install firm-fit- ting storm doors and windows and seal all cracks through which heat can escape with caulking and weatherstripping. And you should have a rudimentary understanding of what makes your furnace tick, whether it is a forced warm air furnace or a hot water system. Forced Warm Air Systems — when the thermostat calls for heat the furnace automatically energizes, igniting the gas burners and heating the heat exchanger area. When the air surrounding the heat exchanger reaches between 50C and 60C, the furnace blower turns on, drawing air from the house through the return air ducts and the filter to the furnace. The blower forces the air around PRE CHRISTMAS SALE a-als=s| Order Now to vEnsure Delivery. As the house temperature rises, the thermostat shuts off the burners. The blower, however, continues to operate until the heat exchanger temperature is reduced to between 32C and 40C, The combustion of natural gas takes place inside the metal heat exchanger and the products of combustion are vented to the out- side via the chimney or, in the case of the new high efficiency fur- naces, through a wall vent to the outside. Hot Water Systems — The most common system utilizes a pump to circulate hot water throughout the house and back to the boiler. In the gravity system, the heated boiler water is circulated throughout the house by gravity flow. This flow is created by the difference in weight of the warmer water from the boiler and the cooler water returning to the boiler. Large piping and radiators are required because the force creating the flow is small and the response time to temperature is very slow as compared to the pump driven system.
