Purchases are essential? Which can
be deferred? Priorities must be
established: a plan of action
developed.

INTIAL INVESTMENTS

Obviously, # bed to sleep in,
chairs to sit on and a table to cat at
are going to be among the first ac-
quisitions. However, one of the
single most important long term
investments may well be carpet.

A soft, plush texture underfoot
imparts an immediate sense of
warmth, color, even luxury, and
goes a long way to offset the
skimpy, bare-boned look that so
many first apartments have.

Wall-to-wall carpet can also be a
significant unifying clement if the
initial decor is nade up of an odd
assortment 3f furnishings -- pieces
collected along the way from rela-
lives and garage sales, plus a few
newly purchased items.

Carpeted platforms can often
take the place of furniture. Strewn
with pillows to provide seating, or
a mattress or futon for sleeping,
carpeted built-ins can be excellent
space expanders.

The expanse of color and texture

on the floor, continuing up
another level to the platforms,
tends to give a room: the ap-
pearance of eatra space.

Since the cushiony carpet texture
can camouflage minor ir-
regularities in the platform it
covers, basic do-it-vourself con-
struction often will suffice for such
projects.

ADDED BENEFIFS

Carpets also add more to a room
than just beauty. Insulation,
acoustics and a safe non-skid sur-
face underfoot are just a few of
the benefits.

An unbroken expanse of light-
colored carpet, together with a
complementz:y tone in wall paint,
will make a sinall space appear
much larger. On the other hand,
deeper colors can make a large
room scem more intimate.

Carpet color can also create an
active or tranquil atmosphere. A
room facing north or northeast
with little or no direct sunlight can
be warmed with sunny colors,
while a room facing south or
southwest, receiving plenty of
light, can be tempered with cool
blues and greens.

Your preference in decorating
styles will also influence choice of
carpet. Highly twisted textured
