of AIDS risk

Then came the pill and libera-
tion. It affected millions of young
women (and some not so young)
who decided they’d been missing
something and went looking for it.

“Fice love’ had a higher price
tag than they knew.

A few years ago the world got a
scare. It was called Herpes and a
nasty bit of business — a truly in-
curable and high: contagious sex-
ually-transmitted cisease. We all
shuddered at this abomination —
infagine having to live with vecur-
ring bouts of painful genital sores!

We thought, at that time, that
ogthing could be worse. Sexually
promiscuous people developed
worry lines and the sales of con-
doms escalated.

But the one ‘‘redeeming’’
feature of herpes was that
although it was a dreadful disease,
the only risk of death was to un-
bdrn infants and this could be fair-
ly well dealt with by Caesarian bir-
ths.

Then, the horror of AIDS
knocked herpes back to the medi-
cal columns and back. pages.

For a while, we were told that
drug users and homosexuals were
the only high-risk groups. Certain
African natives and Haitians were
also at risk and the disease among

It’s easy to see that the entire
world is at risk.

What is even more frightening is
that a casual encounter, many
years ago, might still carry a curse.

There’s not a whole lot that
anyone can do about that except
pray a lot.

can do to save our lives and those

revolution right back where it
belongs. 1960.

A traveller is at the greatest risk
because there's little chance that he
would ever be able to find the
source of contagion. Imagine try-
ing to locate Fifi that you picked
up in a bar?
