The food in Fiji is wonderful —
unless you get unlucky and choose
the wrong place to stay.

The menu features lots of
beautifully prepared vegetables —
some exotic ones. They don’t tend to
prepare foods that are too hot and
spicy, unless you choose from the
wide variety of Indian curries. Meats
and fish are generally grilled on hot
coals or baked in underground
ovens. If you like fruit you'll get
your share in Fiji.

[ found the prices very reasonable
— unless | splurged and did the din-
ing room at one of the monster
hotels. Then you'll get billed just like
everywhere else in the world.

Drinks, especially beer, are
moderately priced. The beer prices

are a salute to probably the world’s
most prolific beer drinkers — the
Australians. They visit Fiji in droves.

While you're in Fiji you must at-
tend a Jovo — a feast usually featur-
ing the whole pig, roasted in banana
leaves in an underground oven. The
lovo usually includes a program of
singing and dar. .‘ng and if I told you
that the Fijians rival the Welsh for
wonderful choirs you'll get the
picture.

And then there is the Yaqona
drinking ceremony. Yayona comes
from the root of the pepper plant
and is prepared in a large carved
ceremonial bowl. dt is perhaps the
nastiest concoction I've ever tasted
unless you consider mati in
Argentina.

With both, you are expected to
drink the whole bowl or cupful
