CASH PRIZES FOR STUDENTS’ IDEAS

Schools win safety awards

FOUR NORTH Shore schools
have won awards for innovative
traffic safety ideas.

North Vancouver’s Westview
Elementary and West Vancouver’s
Hillside, Sentinel, and West. Van-
couver Secondary Schools were
four of 53 B.C. schools to win the
Insurance Corporation of B.C.
awards,

The 1986 Traffic Safety Award
program, organized by ICBC and
the Ministry of At‘orney General,
was open to 2,500 schools
throughout the province.

This year’s award winning uctiv-
ities from elementary schools in-
clude booklets, posters, videos and
cassette tapes promoting safety ac-
tivities such as seat belt use and
bicycle safety.

Most secondary school entries
focused on drinking-driving
awareness programs.

Program awards of $300 will go
to 27 elementary schools and 26
secondary school traffic safety
committees. All award winners will
receive certificates and plaques to
display in their schools.

All cash awards are to be used in
the schools for educational pur-
poses. Letters of congratulations
have been sent to all winners by
ICBC’s Traffic Safety Education
Department.
