Van teachers in the coming year go to

arbitration in the next couple of weeks.
There’s a news blackout at the moment on the
teachers’ precise demands, but further in-
creases (rumored to total $3 million in the case
of North Van) will certainly be sought.

One point frequently overlooked by the
public at such times is that a majority of
teachers, like other public servants, receive
guaranteed pay hikes every year, regardless
of any overall salary increase won by
negotiation or arbitration. These take the
form of yearly increments in accordance with
the teacher’s established salary scale, which
usually extends over 10-12 years. Within that
scale a junior teacher might typically receive
an annual increment of over 4% and a senior
teacher more than 3%.

For the average teacher earning $35,100
this translates into an automatic increase of
around $1,350 and proportionately higher
for a senior teacher earning up to $42,000--
-except for the minority who have already
reached the top of their scale. Many private
sector employees today, with frozen pay
packets, might regard = such
themselves as nice extra gravy.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with the
increment system. But in school districts the
size of those on the North Shore, it alone can
obviously add up to hundreds of thousands
of extra dollars annually. With further
teachers’ jobs and education services threat-
ened by slashed school budgets, trustees
should not neglect this quite costly factor in
their presentations to the arbitrator.
