Prince George, B.C. 1 NL LIONS GATE Hospital has again earned the distinction of being awarded a _ three-year accreditation. The award is the highest honor given by the Canadian Council on Hospital Ac- creditation and means that the hospital is numbered among the finest in the country. A three-year accreditation is an acknowledgement that standards are met or sur- passed for all essential functions and that the hospital is operating in a consistent, progressive manner. However, with the growing pressure of drastic funding cuts from Victoria, Lions Gate may find it an increasingly challenge to maintain its distinction. The hospital’s Senior Assistant Administrator, Eric O'Dell, says that if NV man dies on Everest NORTH Vancouver resident Blair Griffiths, a CBC cameraman on _§sabatical leave with the Canadian Mount Everest expedition, died last Thursday in an avalanche on the Himalayan mountain. Griffiths, whose home was at 777 West Queens Avenue, died above the 17,000 ft. base camp just two days after three Sherpa guides in the same party. The deaths prompted seven other climbers to quit and the expedition was finally totally abandoned Tuesday. AS - Wednesday, September 8, 1982 - North Shore News IN SPITE OF FUNDING CUTS Lions Gate were ever to slip from receiving a three-year accreditation “we would be very disappointed”. « Whereas the accreditation inspection was carried out in April, when the hospital was reeling from the news of the underfunding, O'Dell predicts pressures may become more noticeable. “These funding cuts make it a lot tougher to maintain standards,” he said. However, policy adap- tations indicate Lions Gate's determination not to let its level of care slip. “It is our hospital policy to do everything possible to maintain the quality of care,” says O'Dell. “It was in that event that we chose to close beds rather than reduce the quality of service we were offering.” The accreditation report made special mention of the hospital's “many excellent ambulatory day care programs”, the “innovative and caring” nursing care and the “hospital-wide quality assurance program”. Survey by the CCHA is Our hospital still tops voluntary and approximately 40% per cent of British Columbia’s hospitals are accredited. The CCHA receives its authority from the federal secretary of state and members are drawn from a variety of hospital establishments and medical organizations. Lion’s Gate Medical Coordinator Dr. Jim Corbett participates in the program by joining teams inspecting hospitals in other areas of the country. The CCHA survey team conducts.a thorough, on-the- spot analysis of the hospital’s plant, facilities and _per- sonnel. The analysis is “patient oriented” and _ its goal is identical with that of the hospital: to encourage the delivery of the best standard of health care. Lions Gate's O’Dell says of the scheme: “It is one of the better tools we have available to us to assess what is happening in the quality of patient care, by = skilled individuals knowledgable in hospital care and who can give a peer review.” B.C.’s No. 1 Workout!
