— 66, March 21, 1979. - North Shore News NV takes a big one in Maple Ridge ‘After trailing for most of the first two periods North» Van staged a come-from- ..., behind assault in the third _.’ period; scoring’ two un- answered goals for a well- deserved 4-3 win over the Chiefs in’ Maple Ridge Saturday night. | But the big part ‘of the ‘story was the way they did it. Only six North Van skaters were on hand for the opening whistle—the other half of the team stalled on the road with car trouble on their way to Maple Ridge. But the gutsy North Van team elected to make a game of it anyway rather than lose by default. ; And, as it turned out, it was:a very wise move as the rest of the team arrived for the second period. North Van fell behind 1-0 in the first period with Maple Ridge scoring at the twelve minute mark. Three minutes into the ~—* second frame Maple Ridge pulled ahead 2-0 but two minutes later Brad Sharp got the North Van team on the scoreboard, . scoring from — Kevin Gouchee and Mark Powrie. With only five minutes remaining in the period Wally Coy combined with Sharp and .Gouchee to even the score at 2-2. But it took the Chiefs only fifty seconds to strike back and carry a 3-2 lead into the final frame. Two quick goals 53 seconds later Dan Hogan | flipped - home the winner with Glenn Clausen and Sharp drawing “assists, for a final 4-3 score. But on Sunday afternoon in Port Coquitlam it was} ‘quite a different story for the - West Van Rockets. While North Van had been concerned about only. half their team arriving-Rockets’ goaltender Randy Smith at times must havé wondered if any of his team had come to play, as he was the big factor in keeping the score respect- - able in their 6-5 loss to the Blazers. While being outshot 19-10 by POCO in the first period, thanks again to some sensa- tional goaltending by Smith the Rockets found them- ‘selves on the long end of a 4-3 score. But their good fortune was destined not to last. After a scoreless second period the Blazers outscored . the Rockets 3-1 in the third period with PoCo’s winning goal coming with only 48 seconds remaining in the game. In. that third period the Rockets did come to life and had many scoring opportuni- ties, outshooting PoCo goal- tending and came away empty handed. Bill Reid scored two goals for the Rickets in their losing cause, while Ernie Kostner, Al Wilson and Mark Piro added singles.
