PRESENTATION HOUSE Photo Gallery is one of less than a handful
of arts organizations to receive a grant from the Greater Vancouver
Regional District.

The North Vancouver gallery was awarded $5,000, The other two
groups to receive regional funding are the Vancouver Symphony
Orchestra, which secured $74,000, and the Vancouver Opera,
which obtained a $38,000 grant.

This is the third year the GVRD has disbursed grants to the syin-
phony and the opera but the first for Presentation House Gallery,
which the granting jury recognized as a “regionally significant
organization.”

Arts Council president Mary Caple, who joined the council shortly
after its inception, remembers early meetings in the: old Red Cross
house (now occupied by the West Vancouver Library), to the

The council.was once the sole umbrella group overseeing the arts
‘in West Vancouver. Now Caple says she is proud tu be part of a
team working to raise the profile of the local arts.

- This year the council is planning to develop its volunteer program,
refine its own role with regard to the arts, and create a broader-
based community services program.

Student winners

‘TWO NORTH Shore fine arts students have each won $450 scholar--

THE CANADIAN Broadcasting. Corporation (CBC) and Saturday

_ Night magazine are sponsoring a joint literary competition for new
‘short stories, personal essays and poetry.

. Entrants stand to win $10,000 each and have their work braodcast
on CBC Radio and published in Saturday Night. . '

The contest is oper to all Canadian citizens. Manuscripts must be
original and unpublished. Submissions should be between 2,000
and 3,000 words, written'in English, typed, double-spaced and in-
clude the author's name, address and telephone number.
