How long does it usually take to
create a coat of arms?: There is
no standard length of time, it can
vary and it) can ovary quite
dramatically. Semetimes sou can
teach an agreement with the reci-
piemt quite rapidly. .vou dust hit it
early on in the discussion process.

“Bur other times tt takes a very
long time, it can take a year to [4
cnonths. Sometimes sou can get
80% of the idea and you miss
20% for a while and you kind of
hold on to that 80% that everyone
is comfortable with and then you
zero in on the 20%."

How did you feel when you were
first offered the job of being the
first Chief Herald of Canada?:
“It was a tremendous honor to be
offered the position, 1 enjoyed it a
lot. It’s @ tremendous opportunity
and each case is different. It’s
wonderful working with so many
different people and groups.”’

What do you think heraldry is?:
“Modern heraldry, above ail else,
must be good art. One of the
things to keep in mind about
heraldry is that you're dealing
with a true symbol. It isn’t a logo,
it isn't a trademark. It flows on
forever."*

What was it like working with the
District. of North Vancouver on
their coat of arms?: ‘‘While I of-
fered them some suggestions I also
tried to be a good listener.”

On the most important part of the
coat of arms: ‘‘The most impor-
tant part of the design is the
Shield, and on the shield we might
have this or that for a particular
reason. If you like the sound of
what you are hearing then we go
ahead and commission what we
call an approval sketch, which is a
