to make his mark

WHEN SEVEN-year-old Steven Hotzak took a notion to
learn how to swim, it was a tense moment for his mother.

Arleen Hotzak was fully clothed
and a little stunned when Steven
made his big decision and took a
flying leap into a swimming pool.

**] waited to see if he would
come up. Then I dragged him
out,”® she recalls.

Now, only three years later,
Steven has completed all eight col-
ored swimming badges. his sur-
vival badge and three lifesaving
badges.

He has also become a North
Shore News carrier, largely to help
finance his new hobby, which is
skiing. That and cycling make for
a busy boy.

Hotzak recognizes her eldest son
as a lad of “strong determination.
once he’s made his mind up.”

So three years ago, right after
pulling Steve out of the pool, Hot-
zak got into her swimsuit so that

she could supervise her son’s
fledgling attempts at swimming.

She was worried about the effect
the sport would have on Steven’s
asthma,

“The doctor said swimming
would help, and it really has.
Steven is healthier,’* says Hotzak,
who put Steven into lessons at the
North Vancouver Recreation Cen-
tre, and later at the William Grif-
fin pool.

He can’t begin on his bronze
medallion until he’s 13, so Steven
plans to keep busy by retaking a
colored badge, for practise, and
learning some beginning com-
petitive techniques through the
Esso Swim Canada program.

ALTHOUGH STEVEN Hotzak only started swimming three years ago, the 10-year-old newspaper carrier has
already earned all of his Red Crass badges. The next step is to work on his Bronze Medaltion, but no one is
allowed to earn this level until the age of 13.
