The North Shore church is one of hundreds across North America that will be passing the plate Sunday morning as part of “Souper Bowl Sunday,” a program founded seven years ago in South Carolina. On last year's Super Bowl Sunday, over ],200 churches took part in raising $1.3 million for food banks and anu- poverty groups. Program organizers hope to break the $2 million mark this year. “I’m on a Presbyterian computer net- work and a news item appeared about this program,” said West Vancouver Presbyterian’s Rev. fan Victor. “And | thought ‘This is really wonderful. Because it’s simple. You don’t need a committee. You just do it.” ” Unlike most fundraising campaigns, Souper Bowl Sunday has no administra- tive costs. All that the people who set it up ask is that each participating church phone in its toral amount collected on the after- noon of Super Bowl Sunday. The money ~ SHOULDN'T YOU HAVE THESE -_ RETURNS IN YOUR 3 YEAR 12.8% 1 YEAR 21.6% raised is then distributed to an organiza- tion of the church’s choice. All monies raised by the West Vancouver Presbyterian church will be forwarded to the North Shore Harvest. “Our youth group leader Rob Alexander knows (the Harvest’s) David Foster quite well so he was delighted when I told him that was where we were going to send the stuff,” Victor said. Souper Bowl founder Rev. Brad Smith, of a Presbyterian church in C ‘olumbia, South Carolina, has been delighted to see how the idea of making, Super Bow! Sunday into an occasion of *loving God and loving our neighbors” has grown since 1990. “It is such an easy way for all of us to greatly impact our local communities and to collectively make a difference across this country,” says Smith. “But we would really like to get more congrega- PREPARING to pass the soup bow! this Super Bow!
