Taurven Centre teaches social and life skills By Layne Christensen Community Reporter AMID the fight indus- try and bustling com- merce of Lower Lonsdale, the Taurven Centre is a hive of activity. At this converted store space at 165 E. Isr Street, 1] adults are intent on various pursuits. Linda embroiders floral designs for a gift card. Raymond weaves a placemat at the loom in the front of the open workspace. Vinney sorts fennel seeds, culled from a plot at the Moodyviile Community Garden. In the kitchen area, Michael uses a hand mill to roll oats. “We are trying to build a bridge between the person inside and the modern world outside,” explains — John Glanzer of the centre's activi- des. Glanzer is the centre's director and one of five “co- workers” who work daily with the participants, aged 19 to 45 and all mentally challenged, teaching them a combination of life skulls and social skills. The centre, which opened its doors in July, is founded on the International Camphill Movement, which began’ in Scotiand 50 years ago. Camphill is based on the teachings of Austrian philoso- pher Rudolph Steiner, whose concept of anthroposophy, “knowledge of man,” is also the model for the Vancouver Waldorf School in) North Vancouver. Most of Camphill’s 80 worldwide centres are in rural areas, where handicapped adults and their co-workers work and live together in a rural setting. Things are slightly differ- ent at the Taurven Centre, which operates as a day centre in an urban setting. But even t ‘Taurven, “connection to the land is very important,” said Glanzer. “Its one point JAILGRMOTIVE ALIGNMENT SPECIALISTS : Pigs: - A.R.A. This coincides with many retirees having to change their RRSP’s into RIF’s. Serious concerns arise for individuals regarding their financial futures and the challenge of reinvestment. However, restructuring invest- ments is relatively easy when an individual works with a pro- fessional financial con- sultant/ planner. Many people think that if they meet with a Financial planner they will have to buy something. In most cases this is not true, as a simple redesign of currently owned finan- cial plans can signi- ficantly improve an individual's position. Realignment of invest- ments, with some tax planning, may increase yields up to 11%. Coor- dination of the types of assets held inside and outside RRSP’s would be considered to reduce tax burdens and to increase yields. An hour spent with a financial planner may be worth it’s weight by up to 5%. Please call 983-2235 for information on how we can help. In the morning the partici- pants work oat crafts. Afternpons are given over to artistic activities — painting, drama production or music therapy. There are regular for- ays to) Lonsdale Quay and every Thursday a walk along the West Van seawall. The premise is that with order comes confidence and a clarity of thought. Roy Pallant, whose 31-year-old son Michael visits Taurven daily, has noticed a profound differeace in the way his son lives and behaves. o TUNE-UP “He understands what happens in life much more clearly. He’s much = more observant than he was before,” said Pallant of his son, Who has found enjoy: ment in Woodworking, paint- ing and gardening. “When life was cluttered, he didn’r do that. He was so busy trying to cope.” The Taurven Centre oper- ates with financial assistance from the Ministry — tor Children and Families, for- merly the Ministry of Social Services, and private donors. Al} referrals to the centre must go through the ministry, said Sherri Towaij, acting district supervisor of the ministry's Services to People with Mental Handicaps division.
