Plant charged with pollution

NORTH VANCOUVER-based
CanadianOxy Chemicals Ltd. has
been charged with pollu-
tion-related offences in connec-
tion with the operation of its
Squamish chemical plant.

ial Waste Management Act of in-
“troducing a business waste into
the environment and. one count
under.the federal Fisheries Act of
depositing a deleterious substance
into waters frequented by fish.

conservation officer for the B.C.
Environment Ministry, said the

charges follow an investigation by
the ministry into a Dec. 16, 1992,
spill at CanadianOxy’s Squamish
plant.

The spill involved 73,000 litres
(16,058 gallons) of sodium chio-
ride. An undetermined amount
entered Cattermole Slough.

The maximum penalty under
the Waste Management Act is $1
million, The maximum penalty
under the Fisheries Act is
$300,000.

CanadianOxy is scheduled to
appear in Squamish provincial
court on Tuesday, July 27.
