But if you've been tramping familiar local trails for months (or years), and you're feeling that atavistic urge to go beyond the blazes, to venture into the austere Neverland of ice and rock that begins where the trai! ends, go out and get a copy of this welcome re-issue of Bruce Fairley’s instant classic before you take another step. Twenty-fi ve bucks may seem a stiff ticket for a paperback, how- ever well bound, but the most cursory flip through the hefty 376 pages of A Guide to Climbing and Hiking in Southwestern British Colunbia makes it look tike a - bargain. - ’ The descriptions of approaches and routes ta practically every - climbabie peak in southwestern __ 8.C. are miracles of precision and compression, and when you think - of the uncountable hours of esearch, not to mention the col- lective physical effort represented by this book, it’s enough to make you collapse in your tracks. Don’t be intimidated. Yes, many of the routes are for hardcore climbers with topgun skills and more hardware than a Schwarzenegger flick, but Fairley always presents the full range of possible approaches and there’s many a mountain that seems an impenetrable fortress from one side but littie more than a stiff scramble from another. What Fairley does for the moun- tains of southwest B.C., Karl Bruhn does for more than 500 of the finest fishing lakes from all over the province in his book Best of B.C. Lake Fishing. Bruhn is a match for Fairley in conciseness when describing lakes and access routes, but there’s something that brings out the lyricist in the most taciturn angler. The combination of piscatorial John Moore © BOOK REVIEW passion and the love of words has produced some of the finest writ- ing in the world; not just Hem- ingway’s The Old Man and The Sea, but the fishing sequences of The Sun Also Rises, and the short stories, the journalism and fiction of Roderick Haig-Brown, Bret Harte, Thomas McGuane, the in- cidenta! fishing stories of Col. Jim Corbett, who hunted man-eating tigers professionally in the Hima- layan ravines when he wasn’t fish- ing, the articles in battered barbershop copies of Field & Stream, the columns of resident Province outdoorsman, Tony Eberts. Bruhn is a veteran outdoors writer, so this is more than just an excellent, well-organized guidebook; it’s peppered with anecdotes, fishing tips and excur- sions into the little-known waters of B.C. bass and carp fishing as a respite from the pursuit of the Wily Trout.
