Janet Shaw, a labor relations officer with the Health Sciences Association (HSA), the union that represents NSUBH employees, said negotiations which began last month with North Shore Health have been referred to mediation. The union was certified last November to represent about 35 paramedicals, including " speech language pathologists, physio and -occupational therapists, social workers, community care licensing assessors and nutritionists. Shaw said their wages and benefits lag substantially behind other HSA members employed in the health care system in B.C. “Our members in North Shore Health work in areas that are traditionally defined as female so they experience the same problems all of our members face related to gender-based discrimination,’’ said Shaw. “But in addition to that they receive between eight and 20% less in wages than HSA members working throughout the in- dustry.” She said the employees want parity with HSA members employed in hospitals and other health care facilities. **The health care professionals at North Shore Health have, in many cases, more responsibility than their counterparts in the hospital system because they are out in the community and in peo- ple’s homes. “They are more autonomous and are paid less with fewer benefits." The Royal Commission on Health Care and Costs recom- mended that many services be shifted from hospitals to com- munity-based care facilities. According to Shaw, part of that commitment involves adequate compensation and recognition of the expertise and education of those workers. ~ PARK IN WOODWARDS PARKADE.
