NEWS BRIEFS —NEW. BI Chiorine leaks LEAKING CHLORINE closed a North Vancouver pool Sunday. According to North Vancouver Recreation Commis- sion director Gary Young, the public swimming pool at pViliam Griffin Recreation Centre was closed for several jours. “It was actually a very small leak. The staff reacted quite properly just in case the problem was larger than what the meters were tellimg us. There was a slight leak where the valve goes into the tank. “‘When the system kicks in it was sucking the chlorine into the main system and there was no leak at all. But when it shut off there was just enough pressure to allow some gas tc escape,’ Young said. The chlorine tanks are in a sealed chamber. Chlorine is used to purify the pool water. When pressure rises to a certain point within the chamber, the gas is vented out- side the building. **Because of the way the wind was blowing, it was blown in the front door,’”’ Young said. The North Vancouver District Fire Department was called to investigate the incident. Approximately 25 pool users were evacuated as a safety precaution. : Trio charged NORTH VANCOUVER RCMP have charged three men following a Jan. 17 burglary at a North Vancouver church. . Suspect claimed he'd been coerced to pick Me From page 1 to his friend Snelgrove. Manchester’s North Vancouver home was one of the locations Cynthia Kilburn, bound and wrapped in a sleeping bag, was held during the ordeal. Manchester claimed a youth he’d never seen before brought Kilburn to his home against his wishes. Allan Kilburn took the stand last Friday and told the court how after he had received the ransom note and contacted the RCMP, he returned home to find the kid- nappers had bound and gagged his four-year-old twins. Kilburn said that when he told Mulvahill on the phone later that evening he was having trouble securing the $200,000 in so short a time, Mulvahil! replied, ‘‘I talked ‘to a bank manager today and he said it would be no problem to get the money. If you want (your wife) that’s fine, if you don’t, it makes no difference to us.” After Kilburn dropped off the ransom money, a nervous Mulvahill phoned again. ; “Pm way over my head as it is. * - You won’t be dealing with me anymore, you'll be dealing with other guys.” up ransom in a recorded statement Mulvahill made to RCMP officers the morning after his arrest on Dec. 22, Mulvahill claimed he’d been coerced by ‘‘very well-con- nected people’? to pick up the ransom money, but that cohorts scheduled to take the money from him “never showed.’’ Fearing he would be accused of bungling the heist Mulvahill fled with the marked ransom money and went on a shopping spree. “I would buy a few suits and try to start a new life some- where,”’ he told RCMP officers. The spree led to Mulvahill’s ar- rest in a Park Royal Shopping Centre tailor shop. Mulvahil! later told RCMP officers that he didn’t want to identify the alleged masterminds who recruited’ the individuals charged with kidnapp- ing because he feared for his life. “I'm going to go to jail for this, but you don’t think they'd be able to get me in there? ... I’ve tried using false names and changed (living) locations, but they’ve always found me. They use people.”’ The pre-sentencing hearing for Mulvahill and Snelgrove has been scheduled to reconvene in B.C. Supreme Court for three days starting Feb. 17. WV MLA attacks tuition WEST VANCOUVER- Garibaldi MLA David Mit- chell, the Liberal House leader and opposition critic for the ministry of advanc- ed education and job train- ing, has criticized the pro- vincial government: for say- ing it may have to break its pre-election promise to freeze post-secondary tu- ition fees. Advanced Education and Job Training Minister Tom Perry has said the government may have to back down on its vow to freeze tuition fees because the freeze could cost the government mil- lions of dollars. The suggestion did not sit well with Mitchell. “Which election promises do the NDP intend to keep?’’ asked Mitchell. “This is similar to the situation in Ontario where the NDP promised to eliminate tuition fees during their provincial elec- tion campaign as a. way of secur- ing the votes of students.” Mitchell noted that once the NDP became elected in Ontario, they raised tuition fees by 8%. He added that he hopes a simi- lar pattern is not being repeated by the B.C. NDP provincial gov- ernment and urged Perry to stand firm on his party’s election prom- ise.
