8 - Friday, February 22, 1991 —- North Shore News MAILBOX Budget 7 ‘shameful’ Open letter to the Mayor and Council of the District of North Vancouver Re: proposed tax raise of 22 per cent. A rise of 22 per cent for 1991's municipal tax is not only insulting to the taxpayers, but is shocking and disgraceful. } and many other taxpayers knew you had wrecked our beautiful municipality, and now you have confirmed it. In good times of our economy you, as former mayor and coun- cil, ave squandered the tax- payers’ monies with your rule of committees and task forces, only to discover now that it all ends up in your lap. During the best years of municipal growth you have wrecked the municipal financial status, ruined the environment on the east side of the municipality by indiscriminately cutting all the beautiful trees, and made us drink crappy water for weeks at a time. One thing we as district tax- payers are blessed with, however: that the former mayor and several aldermen have left the municipal offices. Not only has the old council caused the municipality to be broke, but last year the council had the gall to raise its salaries, from $13,677 to $18,000 -—— a 31 per cent increase. The old council also raised the salary of the district mayor from $45,591 to 54,000 —- an increase of 18 per cent. In a free society, when a business is unable to perform con- structively and progressively, it closes its business. The district council, on the other hand, raises its salaries and ups the taxes. I, and many other taxpayers, can no longer tolerate this sloppy performance of the past coun- cillors, and demand upon them to get off our backs and resign. Peter S. Faminow North Vancouver Budget has problems Dear Editor: 1 could not believe the state- ments Ald. Ernie Crist said at the recent North Vancouver District Council meeting as he unveiled a provisional 1991! budget: ‘Budgets are never very popu- lar, but someone has got to do it.” He also stated, ‘‘This budget means an automatic loss of 1,000 votes.’” Ald. Crist, who makes no effort to relieve the already overburden- ed taxpayer in this time of reces- sion, should listen to his fellow alderman Rick Buchols who stated, ‘*This tax increase is ‘un- conscionable.”’’ Council should evaluate what the community real- ly wants and not be put in the position of reacting to pressure groups that may not represent the mainstream of opinion. I hope the community voices its displeasure with the proposed 22 per cent tax increase and the complacency of Ald. Crist whose only concern is loss of votes.
