| GIRTHRIGHT| fe Call 997-7395 © Free Prewrancy Test « HAVE YOU ever heard of the Triads? Only vaguely, prob- ably. But with immigration from Hong Kong being seen by our politicians and media as the greatest thing since sliced bread, you are going to hear a lot more. With 1997 loom- ing, the Triads are getting ready to leave, just as the Mafia got out of Cuba when Castro arrived. The Triads are internationai Chinese crime syndicates. But they are much bigger and even more ruthless than the Mafia, control the largest share of the world’s heroin trade, and are deadly killers. (It was Triad hit-men who slaughtered people indiscriminately in the Golden Dragon restaurant massacre in San Francisco in 1977.) There are 300,000 Triad members in Hong Kong, and a heavy number already in Canada and the U.S. Meanwhile, there is no doub: that Hong Kong is the largest heroin collection and distribution centre in the world. It was with some amusement, therefore, that I saw the Evening Wimp referring recentiy to that ci- ty’s financial success as ‘Hong Kong’s bright flame.’’ The Triads are top players in the $100 billion a year profits that flow from the drug trade in the U.S. — more than the profits of the combined Fortune 500 com- panies.’ And Canada is part of the story, as you will see if you read Gerald L. Posner’s Warlords of Crime, published by McGraw-Hill. Posner went all over the world getting material for his book, and his story is a scorcher. But there were two statements in it that are of special importance to this area, gripped as it is by the Asian Inva- ston. In the first, he quotes an assis- A TOTAL of 30 retiring teachers were honored June 7 at a dinner put on by North Vancouver School District 44 at the Leo Mar- shall Curriculum Centre. “Together they represent some- thing like 750 years of teaching experience,’’ said board chairman Don Bell. New District 44 school superin- tendent Dr, Robin Brayne also noted that the 30 retiring teachers had had contact with an estimated 38,000 North Vancouver students during their combined careers. Brayne said the number of teachers retiring this year is “‘pret- ty high’’ though there have also been quite a few leaving the pro- fession over the past two or three years. “This may be partly a result of our early retirement plan and ca- reer transition plan,”? Dr. Brayne said. . The retiring teachers and their spouses, as well as the board members, attended the event, which was catered by the Carson Graham secondary school chef training program. Look at what is coming out of Hong Kong and where it’s going and you’ll get a good idea of what the future holds.”* For America, read also Canada. But judging by the ecstatic noises coming from our politicians, you would think it was all good news. They welcome any money and don’t have the faintest idea whether it is of the ‘launder variety, and don’t care much that it contributes to high prices. What we hear from the yuppie mayor of Vancouver, for instance, is that Asian investment is a great thing and that Chinese immigra- tion is wonderful. Federally, we have Jerry Weiner the multicult minister beiching with delight over all the ‘‘en- trepreneurs’’ he is attracting to. Canada — most of whom are from Hong Kong. To simple Simons like him, money is simply money. And he’s no racist. The second Posner statement of importance to Vancouver relates to refugees. “During the months immediate- ly preceding the fail of China, Bri- tain made the fateful decision of adopting an open-door policy for Chinese seeking refuge in Hong Kong. More than three-quarters of Retiring teachers musical entertainment. Several teachers who had previously retired attended the dinner, including former Carson Graham vice-principal Warren Mayo, teacher and administrator Mary Craig and the widow of a former North Vancouver principal, COURTESY (ker“te-si) behavior; thoughtfulness for others. 2.polite act; thougntful act; favor. We sell Volkswagens by the book. | COURTESY AND INTEGRITY SINCE 1946 a million people streamed into the British colony. Included among them were many Triad members...”’. The liberal reply to that sort of thing is ‘So what?’’ So massive crime in Canada on the Hong Kong scale is on the agenda, that’s what. And it will be uncon- trollable. As Posner points out, the Hong Kong police force, which is the 15th in size in the world, hasn’t - been able to make any real dent in Triad activity. Our police will be equally helpless. The Hong Kong police fight the Triads, but a lot of Chinese members of the force have turned out to be in the pay of the criminals, and more than a few white cops have taken huge bribes from the syndicates. It’s difficult to say no to a million bucks. Posner reports, too, that 80 per cent of Hong Kong restaurants, etc., pay the gangs protection moncy. That's the lesson for Vancouver, B.C., and Canada. Not that we will learn it. The politicians — in- cluding the Socreds — don’t want to know. They probably think the Triads are some new kind of toaster, and anyone who says they aren’t is a bigot. By the turn of the century, this West Coast society of ours will be nothing more than a_ pleasant memory. In its place, we will have imported massive corruption, Asi- atic style, and the boys from Hong Kong and Taiwan will control Vancouver City Council and prob- ably the province. To them, buying or terrorizing politicians and judges is routine. If you are old, give thanks that you are not young ®@ honored was: W.R.
