MAILBOX RESPONSE TO BOB HUNTER Forestry practices defended Dear Editor: T must respond to Bob Hunter’s most offensive and misleading ar- ticle of Dec. 18 in which he pre- tends to interpret the auditor general’s report on forestry. I have read the report. Kenneth Dye was critical only of the federal government’s lack of controls to see that the federal/provincial funds were well spent. Dye in- dicated that the Canadian Forestry Service did not have adequate follow-up to see if the plantations survived adequately, or if work was being done on a_ priorized basis. Dye was not critical of the work itself, or of forest matuagement practices, particularly in British Columbia. Indeed, in B.C. the FRDA program has been an outstanding success and the Mailbox policy WHEN SENDING a letter to the editor, be sure to include your name, written legibly, your full address and your tele- phone number. Due to space constraints we cannot publish all the Ictters we receive. Published letters may be edited for brevity, clarity, accuracy, | legality or taste. Avis Lophaw A.T.C.1. R.F.P. Touche-Ross report can attest to that. Hunter interjects his own opi- Nion (such as ‘‘forestry bureaucrats have utterly mismanaged our timberlands’’ or “more often than not inappropri- ate tree stock is planted’’) and leads the reader to believe such Statements are part of Dye's report. That is not so. That's nowhere in Dye’s report. Our forest management prac- tices in British Columbia are as good or better than those practised in Sweden, Germany, New Zealand or Chile. When we con- vert all of our old decadent forests into new beautiful dynamic rot- free second growth trees, there will no longer be that ‘‘devastation”’ following logging. Furthermore, forest companies are not ‘‘sneaky’’ when they leave old growth along the roads. That is being done because it’s a gov- ernment requirement. I would much rather replace those old trees with a new forest for all to see — look at the beautiful second growth forest on the road to Cowichan Lake, Campbell River or Sechelt. Some day all our forests will be that appealing and magnificent. On the coast on our Tree Farm Licence, the company for which I work plants four trees for each one harvested. To state that B.C. is similar to countries where there is ; . . cd . . Bert Wickham F.2.0.C. C.L.U. R.F.P. FIRST ON THE NORTH SHORE... BERT WICKHAM & ASSOCIATES LTD. If Bob Hunter ever returns to British Columbia, I would like to introduce him to some silviculture foresters — he will be astounded to see the forest management prac- tices, especially on Tree Farm Licences. It’s too bad that your readers may believe that Hunter's state- ments were contained in Dye’s an- nual report. That is sneaky repor- ting. Some writers should adhere to a code of ethics similar to that practised by professional foresters. Mr. Hunter, you’re no Dye! W.B. Gayle, RPF Vancouver Thinking of Selling? Call J.
