MAILBOX Forestry editorial ‘full of rhetoric’ Dear Editor: The News Viewpoint of Dec. 11, 1988 cries for a response. Editorial comment, public discussion and media coverage of forestry and land use issues in British Columbia are long overdue. However, as in any public debate, rhetorical content must be scrutinized to divide fact from hyperbole. Your comment on the state of B.C.*s forests, land use issues and the impact of the forest sector on the well-being of present and future generations is rich with excessive rhetoric. Some of your statements deserve the illumination of another point of view. The Stein Valley is not the last unlogged watershed in southwest- em B.C. The Stein is the largest unlogged watershed relatively near to Vancouver. Take a look at a map of British Columbia. Furthermore, controlled development of the watershed in- corporating forestry, cultural heritage values, wilderness and recreation — in a plan to manage the watershed — is in no way analogous to destruction. A ma- jority of residents in the region en- compassing the Stein approve of developmetit of the valley. The Forest Ministry is responsible for management of the Stein Vailey Sawlog and should address the concerns of local residents by beginning development of the watershed. Many communities in British Columbia depend on development of the forest resource for their social and economic well-being. Logging alters the landscape and while openings created by clear-cut logging are visible in satellite photographs, so are towns, cities, highways, farms, vast areas of se- cond growth forest and almost all the works of humankind. It is even Teported that newspapers can be read from sophisticated satellites circling the heavens. It is far too simplistic to write off concerns for meaningful employment as the machinations of reactionaries. A more construc- tive approach would be to discuss the coexistence of values and the needs of different publics in B.C. that are being met through the wise use of ur forests. In the case of the Stein Valley, if focal citizens, the Indian move- ment, wilderness advocates, the forest industry and the provincial government pull together, everyone’s needs can be addressed through developing the valley. Patrick Moresby Coasalting (Forest laductry Stein Task Force) North Vancouver quality not established Dear Editor: A Dec. 11, 1988, editorial touched on an instance involving a logging company that Icft enough material ‘‘to build 2,600 houses.’' I am of an opinion that one can come to such a conclusion only by making some flawed assumptions. Only if the 131,424 cubic metres of material to which you refer consisted of sawlogs would it be suitable for home construction. It is from sawlogs that the solid wood products that include lumber, plywood, shingles and millwork are derived. To my knowledge no one has claimed that the abandoned mate- rial, in the instance to which you refer or any other for that matter, was without exception of sawlog quality. There is therefore no basis 50% OFF for assuming the material was anything but low value pulp logs. Gn close inspection one would undoubtedly find that very little of the 131,424 cubic metres would have provided tumber of suitable length, dimension, quality, strength or species for home con- struction. One could concede that the ma- terial referred to would provide enough wood chips to produce some 20,000 tonnes of pulp but, unfortunately for the iogger, wood chips produced as a by-product of lumber manufacture provide an abundant and cheap source. Only when wood chips are in short sup- ply can wood chips produced from logging residues hope to compete. R.K.
