lives in history THIRTY YEARS ago the partially constructed Se- cond Narrows Bridge collapsed, sending dozens of workers tumbling amid twisted steel to the waters below. When the disaster came, it came swiftly — a sum- mer day one minute, a nightmare the next as stcel girders and lifejacketed workers crashed into the Nar- rows. Rescue vessels were on the scene virtually im- mediately to pull survivors from the debris while of- ficials ashore pored over a list of workers on the span. Scuba divers battled the Narrows’ strong current trying to find bodies, and a week after the collapse all but three had been recovered; three days after that the bridge claimed another life, this time one of the scuba divers. More than 20 men died in the collapse, and today a plaque bears their names. More than two years after the collapse, the bridge, the second largest cantilever span in the country, was officially opened on Aug. 26, 1960. The future is now. 1988 will see the completion of revitalization and beautification works in Dundarave, the start of revitalization works in the Ambleside Business area, the exte.: ton of the Centennial Seawalk from 24th Street to Dundarave pier to cx. snect to the redeveloped Dundarave Park and the commencement of park development, starting at the foot of 14th Street, of newly acquired park land on the waterfront between Ambleside Park and John Lawson Park. Our vision is clear. | expect t:.e Municipality will continue to develop its physical attributes which will enhance the natural god-given features of our locale, maintaining West Vancouver as the most magnificent Municipality in the country. Under my leadership, we will continue to develop policies to preserve the park-like residential nature of our community, One of the main strengths of West Vancouver has been the willingness of its very talented citizens to share their skills and time on behalf of their fellow citizens. We are forever in the debt of those both past and present and hopefully in the future, who have given themselves in service to the community. As a result, our taxes remain low relative to property valua- tion but more importantly, the quality of life in our community is second to none. Recently volunteers working with Municipal staff created two documents of great social significance to our citizens; they are 1.North Shore Social Services, * Programs ° Trends 2. Youth Parties Task Force Report Additionally, many thousands of volunteer hours have been spent on behalf of the community in the area of the Seniors Recreation facility, Memorial Library, Police Department, planning and design approvals, etc. West Vancouver benefits greatly from the active participation in local government by many ratepayer groups, local business groups and an ac- tive Chamber of Commerce. What you see in West Vancouver is a pro- duct of considerable community involvement. | know | speak for all of our citizens when I thank each and every one of you who have contributed over the past towards the betterment of your community. * Issues * We are pleased to share our “Place of Excellence, our parkland com- munity with our neighbours in the Lower Mainland and our many visitors from other parts of Canada and the world.
