22 - Friday, September 25, 1987 - North Shore News PRUNING SHEARS, similar to large scissors, are used for shearing foliage only on those trees and shrubs that tolerate it. Shearing of most trees and shrubs is not recommended because is destroys the natural shape and beauty of the plant. Each shearing cut sends out many new growing points, making the plant dense, while producing small flowers. Deciduous plants are those that lose their leaves every fall. You should prune them to control their size, shape and flowering and to remove dead, diseased or damaged wood. Individual shrubs that keep their natural size and shape nezd fess pruning than hedges that are trimmed to an artificial shape. You can train an_ individual shrub to keep its natural shape by thinning out branches and stems — called renewal pruning — or by pruning branches back to a bud to control the direction of growth — called heading back. When a plant is headed back, the new shoot will grow in the direction the bud points. Before cutting branches ot stems, think ahead to how the plant will look when new shoots appear, Then prune the plant the way you want it to grow. Renewal pruning requires cut- ting individual shoots off just above ground Jevel. On typical flowering shrubs, remove the oldest branches to open it up and allow more sunlight into the cen- tre, This kind of pruning promotes new growth at the base. A list of some common land- scape plants that can be given a renewal pruning is lilac, deutzia, kerria, mockorange, weigela, for- sythia, arrowwood viburnum, St. John’s wort, red twig dogwood, and golden twig dogwood. These plants produce their flowers on the previous year’s wood, so they have to be pruned immediately after they have flowered. Pruning large, mature trees should be kept to a minimum, ex- cept for corrective pruning to remove crossing branches or diseased and damaged wood. When removing large branches, be careful not to tear loose the bark below the cut. Make the first cut on the lower side of the limb, 4 one to two feet farther out on the % v ate limb than where the final cut will § sod be made. Saw upward about halfway through the limb, then make a second cut a few inches farther out on the limb. Cut downward from the top un- til the limb is severed. Finally, saw off the stub. Don’t cut too close to the main trunk and remove the bark ridge around the branch. Every branch has a thick bark tidge separating it from the main stem. Always cut as close as possi- ble to the outer edge of the bark ridge, leaving a narrow ledge. Don’t cut flush with the trunk. ® Chairs e Cushion for Lounges e Cushion for Chairs ° Umbrellas ° Tables -* Lounges SALES LTD.
