Needless to say I felt no
illuminating flash. And unless
it was some sort of experim-
ent in minimal verse, such
lines would give classic
songwriters like Rogers and
’ Hart heartburn in the grave.

It takes years of work, a
natural talent and constant
attention to produce good
lyrics; indeed, _ there’s
where the songs concept
often originates.

Take any of today’s. grea at
musical storytellers - Paul
Simon, Bernie Taupin,
Randy Newman, and you'll
find the first thing you love is
the idea of the song itself. .

This album suffers greatly
from their lack, it’s a visible
and fatal flaw and gives the
vecord no heart. I find it
difficult to imagine someone
spending so much time and
energy on a_ project and
paying so little attention to
the matcral. If Down wants
to produce a memorable and
lasting piece of work, I feel
the first thing he. needs to do
is hire a. good lyricist.

Musically the album is
better. | Many of the tunes

have strong begitnings and
one,

sounds like it’s going to work
into'a respectable. middle-of-
the-road rocker ... but it
wanders off about a third of.
‘the way through. This seems
