28 - Wednesday, June 19, 1985 - North Shore News Singer brings new material From Page 27 Scan’* television series, Ulrich has settled in the plastic glitter of L.A. to get back to the arduous business of writing material for another solo album. Ulrich says she learned an incredible amount from her television experience before it fell victim to wide-ranging CBC budget cuts : ‘‘lt was a totally different medium. | had to learn so much about so many things far removed from music. Being on the other end of a microphone, being the interviewer rather than the interviewee, was a very interesting, very stimulating, very enjoyable experience.” ~ . Returning from video waves to sound waves, Ulrich is determined to reaffirm her standing within- the volatile world of pop music. She explains her move to L.A. as one of opportunity and stimulus for songwriters: ‘Vancouver is a relatively © good place for songwriters, . and there are.a lot of good ones here, Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance of. course, but © L.A. is a great place for songwriters with so many more people involved in the business.”’ Though she ‘is striving against the popular tendency to ape what has come before, to ‘write “new. music not ~ clone music’’, Ulrich says her sound will ‘nevér.- radically change. ~. ; fas “My. audiences’ include - -everybody from kids to elder- ly.people: My music has'a’ : basic wide: appeal, it’s not _ something :! can: consciously -- '" change.”’ = “Modern music, according to’. Ulrich, --has‘ become’ a fragmented mixture.of. eclec- tic sounds without any.of the - single ‘defined movements of past eras. Some she says is in- teresting, some ‘‘boring and obnoxious, not creative or unique in any way.” Concentration on songwriting in L.A. and the prohibitive cost of .touring small venues, has largely kept ~ Ulrich out of local club activity. ‘ - Cc. Heat foundation She is aware, however, that the cost of neglecting live per- formance cannot be measured financially. “It is vital that I don't lose my hand in live perfor- mance,” she says, ‘‘I know are W already that I don't do it enough.” In keeping with this cons- tant need to perform, Ulrich will be bringing a mixture of new songs and a grab bag of old favorites to the Plaza In- IRST-CLASS HOLIDAYS AT STAY-AT-HOME PRICES.
