They control most of it, outlive the men who earn it, and don’t they say about know what to do with it except spend it. Well the spending part of that is changing! According to a New York Stock Ex- change survey from mid-1981 to mid-1983, more women than men entered the market dollar sense by Helen Davenport ECT for the very first time. The majority of a record 7.3 million new investors. ls this simply a _ faddish new trend? I really don’t think so. I see it as a part of a movement towards total health in a way. Exercise, eating right and financial well-being are the focus of an increasing number of women, and just as nobody expects people to return to poor eating habits, similarly, I don’t expect the interest in financial knowledge to disappear. It is not just young profes- sionals who are turning to in- vesting. There is an_en- thusiastic response from women right across the board. Wives are looking for financial planning assistance to enable them to make deci- sions on their own or joint portfolios. Widows recognize the need for modern invest- ment strategies +o maximize their income, and so on. The -tove towards in- dependent investment deci- sions seems to be in direct relation to the spiralling divorce figures we have seen in the past ten years. Women are more anxious to protect and provide for themselves and their futures then ever before. If you are a part of this move into the market, or think that you would like to be, then what is the first thing “for the discerning buyer” | you should do? Well, it would seem essential that you find yourself a good stock- Jbroker whom you can trust well before you invest any money at all. - Financial independence comes through knowledge. It’s tough at first, but my best advice is to draw on the free research that brokerage houses provide. Ask to be put on the mailing list for types of investment you have par- ticular interest in. The reports are DESIGNERS CONTEST For a head start in f THE CLAIROL Fashion Awards are back and Clairol is again searching for young fashion talent. The competi- tion is now underway with entries being accepted until May 31. A country-wide selection process will culminate with the finals at the gala Awards night in the spring of 1985 in Toronto. Last year Canadians from coast to coast held front-row seats at the Awards show held in recognition and sup- port of Canada’s up-and- coming fashion designers. The nationally televised event was watched by more than two million Canadians who were treated to an innovative, exciting and fast-paced show attended by Who’s Who of Canadian fashion — promi- nent designers, celebrities, press, fashion and beauty buyers. Paddye Mann, last year’s winner of the coveted Clairol Fashion Award demonstrates that fashion ideas do not always originate in large metropolitan areas. The 30-year-old Newfoundland- born designer has developed a successful business based in Pakenham, Ontario, a com- munity of 1,400 residents. Mann believes in a strong Canadian fashion industry and that ‘‘it can and must flourish in regional centres as well as it does in Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver.’’ Since winning the Award, Mann has been approached by several retailers and buyers and her business con- tinues to flourish and grow in this small community 30 2419. Gerry Beddal, president of Clairol Canada, this coun- try’s leading manufacturer of haircoloring, says that after seeking fashion industry response to the Clairol Fashion Awards, the com- pany is continuing to refine and improve the Awards to meet the twin objectives of raising public awareness of Canadian fashion and pro- viding a central spotlight for young fashion desingers in this country. ‘“‘Our research has clearly demonstrated the need for greater regional emphasis,”’ says Beddall. ‘‘The introduc- tion this year of a regional semi-final round will give maxiumum exposure to a large number of new designers in their local area and, in addition, it will make Dundarave Terrace BELLEVUE AVE., WEST VAN 1?
