Tom Johnson, deputy
minister of highways opera-
tions for the Ministry of
Transportation and
Highways, said Thursday
that most of the design work
for the catch basin project
has been completed.

The ministry in now seek-

ing Treasury Board approval
for the tender
something Johnson does not
anticipate problems with.
Johnson says the project is
one of the top priorities for a
multi-million-dollar, 12-year
plan to upgrade the

Squamish, Highway and the
Lions-Bay catch basin system
was mentioned in the Throne
Speech as a provincial
government priority.

Plans and models of the
proposed works, aimed at
preventing such tragedies as
the 1983 deaths of two
residents of the Alberta
Creek area, were on display
in Lions Bay on Monday and
Tuesday of this week.

The flood control project
calls for construction of a
catch basin equipped with
grates to filter out debris in
Alberta Creek. .

As part of the plan, Alber-
ta Creek would be diverted

_ into Harvey Creek, with the
combined flow then diverted
into the catch basin and then
through a concrete channel
under the Squamish Highway
and into Howe Sound.

The tons of debris that
swept down Alberta Creek
last year killing the two
teenagers and destroying
several homes would fill only
10 per cent of the basin, ac-
cording to engineers.
