A7 - Sunday, June 13, 1982 - North Shore News rv cal by o x Ee When will CANDU folly end? Dear Editor: Bob Hunter is commended for out about the danger of sending uranium fuel to Argentina. “Energy Probe”, a group of dedicated workers in Toronto, is devoting its energy to this important issue. Its recent newsletter stated: “According to a = secret cabinet document, our government fears. that Argentina will use the Candu nuclear reactor we're building there to produce its first nuclear bomb. This bomb could be in their hands to be speaking as early as next year — if we continue to cooperate with them. We can pull the plug on their plans by pulling our nuclear engineers out of Argentina immediately, before the Candu is com- pleted. ... What's a nice country like Canada doing in the role of the world's leading nuciear arms merchant? The answer, tragically, is that we dug ourselves a hole trying to keep our nuclear industry afloat. Unable to sell reactors at home, AECL (the government-owned Cor- poration responsible for marketing our _ reactors) recklessly went after foreign sales ... It turned a blind eye to other countries’ motives for acquiring our reactors, and to the dollar costs of its activities as well ... The last sale to Argentina lost $130 million of taxpayers’ money When will this madness end? With your hetp, very soon. The only encouraging note in that secret cabinet document is a possibility that fills our leaders with dread — your involved opposition. After remarking that public and media attention “has already begun to focus on the nuclear dimension to our relationship with Argen- tina”, the document warns that “a highly visible anti- Candu lobby” may develop if our policy doesn’t change.” The Energy Probe newsletter tells us we can still be an effective op- position. So let us write Mr. Trudeau immediately and send a donation to Energy Probe which is_ badly needed. Their address is 43 Queen’s Park Cres. E., Toronto MSS 203. Marian Shipley North Vancouver Accept WHO health definition Dear Editor: Upon reading the article in the North Shore News, June 2, 1982, stating “LGH Abortion Row Heading For Court, Pro-Life files action”, I was both appalled and angry. As if things are not bad enough in this “Land of Freedom (?), and with the compounded problems faced by one of the finest hospitals in the Lower Mainland, these Pro-Life people have to stir up more trouble then they are worth. When will they stop? Only when abortions are completely illegal and women, once again suffer under the knives of amateurs in dirty back rooms, leaving the hospitals to clean up the mess. It seems to me that the World Health Organization definition of the word HEALTH should, and must be accepted.
