ANNUAL CAMPAIGN FOR THE HANDICAPPED Helping members of the Door to door canvassers will be out in force starting Sunday collecting for the North Shore Association for the mentally handicapped. In their annual campaign the canvassers will be hoping to raise enough money to provide support to encourage and assist the handicapped into becoming independent members of the com- munity. The North’ Shore Association for the Mentally Handicapped is a partner- ship of mentally han- dicapped persons and their advocates, committed to assisting handicapped citizens to achieve their maximum potential as in- dividuals and as members of the community. For most families of mentally handicapped persons, large institutions are no longer an acceptable residential option. Evidence shows that mentally han- dicapped people progress much more rapidly in the development of their capabilities in a small family- like environment. The Association owns and operates six. residences which provide cheerful, homelike atmospheres. Some are group homes for adults, some are for children and all are staffed with experienced professionals. One such home is designed to accommodate children on a short-stay basis to provide respite for their famihes. A further com- ponent of the Residential Program is the en- couragement and support of mentally handicapped persons who are capable of living independently or semi. independently All persons deserve the Opportunity to work and be Issue Price $85.00 [ \ameter 10° 245cm rewarded for their labours. Job and life-skills training are essential ingredients if persons are to succeed in the job market. People who are mentally handicapped require longer training periods to develop these skills, but when properly prepared can become excellent em- ployees. The sheltered workshops operated for the mentally handicapped on the North Shore specialize in woodworking products, packaging and wrapping. The aim of these workshops is to train people in the use of equipment and the acquisition of the skills they will need to become independent members of the work force. They are paid for the work they do, with incentives for improvements in productivity, work habits and skill development. Workshops are supervised by professionals, assisted in some cases by volunteers. The educational needs of people with a mental handicap must be addressed on an individual basis because the range of mentally handicapped conditions vanes so greatly The Association beheves a full spectrum of educational services should be available to all people.
