A7 - Sunday, April 4, 1982 - North Shore News, SE mail lo x Dear Editor: The News has been having such a good time being silly about North Vancouver education that I almost hate to spoil the fun. Since some . of your readers are serious about their schools, they might be interested in a few facts. First. the North Van teathers and school board are not “ganging up” to “plot M.D.s have (EDITOR'S NOTE: Due to last minute space limitauons in our tissue of April 1 a letter from budget disruption”. Our board put together a tight budget, and Victoria is trying to disrupt it with an ill- conceived and _ mistimed restraints program. Second, Noel Wright insulted the students and staff of Hamilton Junior Secondary in his would-be defence of the school. Mr. Wright portrayed the school as a sort of haven for misfits instead of the lively and SOME say medical profession has some responsibility for abortions, whether they are “early” or “late”, exciting. place it is. He moaned about -the kids’ fate when they had to go instead to dreaded Carson Graham, where everyone is so smart and competent. Well, in- deed they are — and vir- tually everyone at Hamilton has always gone straight on to Carson, so what's the problem? The good in Hamilton's system will Jong survive its buildings, and Carson Graham will do better as a big school with plenty of resources, as it was designed to be. Forty-five per cent of North Vancouver's school- tax base — the tax on Students commercial and _ industrial property — has been “nationalized” by Victoria. That’s so Victoria can make provincial grants to needy school districts. But under the formula, North Van- couver isn't needy, so our businesses and industries are sull subsidizing districts elsewhere in the province, ’ just as they did under the old formula. It’s great for West Vancouver. They were smart enough to keep in- dustry out, so they literally wyhave nothing to lose. The --average West Van homeowner will pay only 6% of the cost per pupil: the quitting New school finance formula hurts everybody North Van homeowner’ will pay 11%. If the new formula stays in force for long, everyone will be hurt. Our kids will be hurt because they're unlucky enough to live in a “prosperous” district. Our business taxpayers will be hurt because their taxes will be spent as the mandarins decree, far from North Vancouver. Homeowners will have to bear the same TAX old unfair burden. And the school board — elected by the voters to be responsible to the voters — will become no more than a rubber stamp for made-in-Victoria decisions. As a school trustee, a taxpayer, and a parent, | intend to fight Victoria's “black hole” centralization of power. Hunter, M.D., in a recent letter to your paper expressed concern: that physicians are held “culpable of delaying abortions at only people who perform abortions at the hosptial. Abortions could not be done at the hospital if the medical profession were opposed to abortion. At L.G.H. in 1981 there were 799 applicants for abortion submitted to the Abortion Committee; all 799 were approved by Dear Editor: The letter from West Vancouver School Trustee D. Sikula (News, March 17) supplies useful salary in- formation for comparison with North Vancouver. The North Vancouver School Superintendent is paid $88 000 per year, 13 per cent above the average for The school system he runs is so good that more than a thousand North Vancouver students have left to attend independent schools. This is 50 per cent above the number predicted by the provincial average. Let's hear it for the North Vancouver School trustees! GWEN ANTAYA _ 986-5560 Om GENERAL (4G) ELECTRIC Appliances CON S.
