Ce - Sunday News, September 20, 1981 Anyone who tries to cram visits to five Hawaiian Islands into a two week vacation must be about two bricks short of a load. ’ Just ask me - I did it. With a map of the islands gripped in my fist I scheduled five days in Kauai, three in Molokai two in Hawaii (Kona), five in Maui and one at Waikiki - just for safety’s sake. With the air traffic situation a little chancey, I wanted 24 hours grace before our homeward flight. I don’t care how organized you are or how little baggage you take, an inter-island flight is going to occupy most of your day. The flight may take 23 minutes but packing, driving to the airport, gassing-up your rentacar, turning it ~ in, checking your bags, waiting at the airport, boarding your flight, getting a new ren- tacar, finding your hotel and unpacking is a_ helluva chore. I don't function at full speed when the temperature is in the 90's, either. Peeling the backs of my legs off plastic car séats isn't one of my favorite jobs. I'm going to give you a quick rundown on each island we visited. I missed a lot - especially on islands that we were visiting for the first time. But. nobody’s perfect. KAUAI Amfac Hotels’ “Islands Resorts” have just opened the newest and finest of their chain - the Waiohai on Poipu Beach. Let’s get something Straight right away - I could NEVER afford this hunk of luxury under normal cir- y Barbara McCreadie cumstances! As it had just opened (July) and was only two thirds finished, some deals were to be had. This hotel stands alone as the most beautiful I ever visited. Don’t go there. First, it spoils your appreciation for budget accomodation _ and second, you can't afford it - or can you? Poipu Beach is down on the sunny south coast of Kauai. It also has the dubious honor of being the first Hawaiian beach I ever had the nerve to tackle. You see, I can’t swim. Body surfing, snorkeling and diving rank right up there with parachuting on my list of foolish ventures. Who needs abject fear? ings to do on Kauai The beach at the Waiohai has something for everyone, including a lovely sandy lagoon where klutzes like me canswim. Heavenly! Kauai is called the “flower isle” and it’s quite lovely. It is also fairly quiet, expecting visitors to do the sun thing during the day, eat early and get the hell to bed. Aside from the luxury hotels, there are a few good restaurants in the Lihue- Wailua area (airport vicinity). That’s an 18 mile drive from Poipu. Now, my daughter and I weren't wealthy enough to eat at the Waiohai. When one C.C. and soda for me and a fruit punch for Suzy cost $6 at the pool bar, we beat a hasty retreat. Instead we looked some budget stuff. There's a “broil-your- own” spot called the “Koloa Broiler” on Koloa Road, near Poipu Beach. Cheap ($15 will get you a steak, salad bar etc.) The surroundings are fairly dismal] but the food ain't bad. The salad dressingy are superb. THE EGGBERT’S is in for Lihue (pronounced Leh- Hooey) near the ‘airport. This place, open _ for breakfast and lunch has my 100 per cent guarantee: Best breakfasts anywhere on the islands and decent prices. Banana pancakes’ with coconut syrup and Denver omlettes are our favorites. Avoid: Brick Oven Pizza (Kalaheo). We split a small “special” and needed some “plop-plop fizz-fizz” . “Colonel Sanders” - the chicken is- cooked hours in advance and is capital “L” YWCA will hold retreat The Vancouver YWCA will be holding a Women's Weekend Retreat on Saltspring Island on the Thanksgiving long weekend. There’s a number of hotels in the vicinity if you're afraid your Visa card will self-destruct without regular use. We drove to Waimea one morning and by the time we got back were asking, “Why me, Lord?” It’s one of the more dismal parts of the island except for a glimpse of Hanapepe Canyon.
