West Vancouver School Board agreed at its Monday meeting to incorporate curriculum content to satisfy the first stages of a new B.C.- wide French program into the Grades 6 and 7 levels. This will allow students in those grades to complete what the Ministry of Education calls “level one” of a six-level French program for secondary schools. Students entering Grade 8 could then go to level two. The upshot is that some students would be able to complete first-year university level French in Grade 12, while others would either have an extra year to repeat a level if necessary, or else would be able to drop French after the University of B.C. requirement in Grade 10. Another feature of the new program is that is in- corporates new textbooks, emphasizes a closer focus on French and Quebec culture, and, for the first time in B.C., introduces a set of common standards for all schools. Superintendent of Schools Ed Carlin said earlier this month. that incorporating level one curriculum content in Grades 6 and 7 is the first step this year towards having the new program fully in place by the 1982-83 school year. “In 1976-77 we started an all-French program _ for grade 7 but we were restricted by the -lack of French teachers. We feel we can deal with that now,” Carlin added. The curriculum content will mean a new written component, as well as the oral component, added to the French program. “Do we want Grades 6 and 7 to be just exposure or part of the new levels system? If we do, then the vast majority of our students will be ready for level two in grade 8. It will be much more meaningful,” Carlin said.
