HINTS FOR HANDINESS

I just bought a new travel
purse — not the $149.95 job,
either! Mine cost me $28 —
and I’m delighted with it. It
has two main compartments,
both roomy. One is zippered
— ideal for passport, tickets
and immunization § card.

Inside the zippered section is
a sub-section, also zippered,
which will hold my
travellers’ cheques.

The other large section
has a firm snap and is going
to accommodate a small
make-up kit, camera, pen
and notebook and assorted
other junk. Ask = any
husband! It, too, has an
inside pocket to carry the
small amount of cash that I
usually carry in the currency

of the country.

The strap is wide cnough
to fit my shoulder com-
fortably, short enough to fit
under my elbow, and can be
shortened further so that I
can wear it under my armpit
in a casbah, making it dif-
ficult for purse-snatching.
The make is “J.R.”. The
fabric is vinyl (in many ways
better than leather, and
besides — I can throw it out
after a year or two without
feeling guilty).

My last four purses have
been the same make and are
carried by all large depart-
ment stores, in all shades,
from white to black. If I had
a million dollars, I'd
probably still carry a cheap
vinyl bag for travel.

The secret of packing a
handbag for travel is this:
Always put your essentials in
the safest place — the one
with the zipper. Don't crowd
that spot because you'll be
hauling-out documents in
every airport and hotel you
visit.

Write your passport
pumber and date of issuc
someplace on your purse
(under a flap ts my favonte
spot). Then you won't have
to drag out the document
when ‘you fill out a multitude
of “entry certificates”.

foreign point, I change some

dropped into the outside
compartment along with my
Kleenex and cigarettes.

Husbands are a collosal
pain-in-the-tail when they
travel. They WON'T carry a
purse and their pockets are
an invitation to pickpockets
everywhere. Wives, purse-
carrying, end up with the job
of safeguarding husbands
documents, minding as
much of the money as they
can, and carting around
essentials such as sunglasses
(Hey, Barb! Get me my
sunglasses!) medicines,
(Hey, Barb, wherja put the
aspirin?) and schedules
(Barb! Where is the train
thing?). I get the shudders
when someone gropes thru
my purse!

If the male traveller
doesn't have a lady-with-a-
handbag along, he usually
resorts to a tweed jacket
with an inside pocket for his
junk. That works fine, until
he meets boiling tem-
peratures and has to shed the
jacket or cook in his own
juice.

There are some very
masculine-looking shoulder
bags available in vinyl and
denim (or burlap) available
for men. If you are travelling
with a husband, buy him one
and insist that he uses it! I
hope you have better luck
than I had! Brian flatly
refuses to rely on anything
besides his back pocket and
my purse.

Here are a couple more
travel tips that may save you
all sorts of problems. It is
plain-damn-stupid for one
traveller to carry all the
money for two! When Brian
and I travel, we split the
funds so that if one of us is
robbed, the other has suf-
ficient money to function for
the next few days.

We carry separate Visa

cards — for different ac-
counts.
At night, Brian’s wallet

goes into his pillowcase. My
purse is tucked into bed
alongside me, or jammed
between the headboard and
the wall. We lock any large
sums of moncy in the hotel
safe.

NEVER lock money or
valuables in a suitcase and
teave it. Suitcases are meant
to travel — and they can
travel just as easily with a
thief as they can with you.

Do you take your purse
into the bathroom with you?
lf you don't, you're a fool!
This advice is especially
sound for single travellers.

your shower or tub is run-
ning. It’s also easy to break-
in, when you figure that
hotel keys disappear every
day. It doesn’t take a degree
in psychololgy to know that
a running bathtub plus a
Single traveller means
money and documents
unprotected in a hotel room.
If you should hear someone
rummaging around, a simple
call such as: “Maid Service”
will put you off-guard.

I hope I've just saved ONE
travelling Canadian from a
robbery!

If you are travelling in a
“Third World” country
especially, check the
numbered sequence of your
travellers: cheques before
submitting them to hotel
safes. Not very long ago, in
Colombia, we heard of a
neat racket! Desk clerks,
with access to the safe, were
removing one or two
cheques from the center of a
pack and making quite a
nice living. The poor stupid
tourist wouldn't discover the
theft until days later, and
often would have no idea
where the cheque took a
walk. At the front of your
booklet there is a space to
enter the number and
amount of any cheque spent.
Use it!

Do you do your homework
before you travel? I hope so!
I'm leaving for Australia in a
few weeks and one of my
daughters kindly raided the
school library for me! Since
it will be my first visit (and I
hope not Last!) to “Down
Under”, I'm reading all sorts
of geography and history.
Why arrive with a blank
mind and galloping
ignorance?
