Across North America there is a tremen- dous surge of enthusiasm for the sport and Vancouver is certainly no exception. _ Far from fizzling out after the first flush of interest, as pessimists were ‘keen to Suggest when the sport first showed signs of developing here in the late sixties, participation in cross country skiing just keeps on growing. The opening of Cypress Park accompanied by the construction of cross country - trails on Hollyburn Mountain have provid a_ splendid location for the Nordic types, and North Shore dwellers are revelling in their easily reached mountain play- . ground. : The: Parks Branch has maintained a constant prog- ram of trail improvement since the Park first opened and now has track setting equipment regularly groom- ing the well marked trails. Snow conditions this win- ter have been so much better than during the past two _ seasons and the surge of cross country types to the Cypress Park trails has the place alive with eager skiers throughout the week as well as almost overwhelming the area on weekends. Ski touring trails have existed on Hollyburn Moun- tain for years, long before Cypress Park ever camé into being. When the Park was first opened the Parks Branch embarked on a foresighted trail construction program, persuaded by keen Nordic enthusiasts such as Sigge Bjorklund that interest in such trails would be keen, and a well warranted effort. New trails were marked out and constructed, old ones rehabilitated.
