Consider colour and light

DECIDING to paint is
a quick decision, but
choosing a colour that’s
just right can be agoniz-
ing. The decorating
experts at Home Depot
offer the following
advice.

Evaluate each area you are
planning to paint in terms of
the amount of natural light it
receives.

South-iacing rooms are
well lit alt day while rooms
with northern exposure receive no direct sun-

light.

Knowing this, you can select paint colours

* to brighten or tone down the appearance of

each room.

“Sun-drenched rooms, for example, appear
cooler with lavenders, grays, greens and blues.
And warm tones, like yellow, red, brown and
Grange can make dimmer rooms seem more
cosy,” says Joe Allen of Home Depot.

it can make people feel uneasy
and overexposed.
To create a comfortable
atmosphere, install dimmer
switches for all overhead light-
ing so you can choose the
ambiance to fit any situation.
You may need it to be bright
when mopping the bathroom
floor, but soft light is better for soaking in the
tub. Candles, coloured bulbs and Christmas
lights add a lovely warmth to any room.
Japanese lanterns and lampshades are inexpen-
sive lighting alternatives. A good desk lamp
and proper reading light, to avoid straining
your eyes, are ever bit as important as mood
lighting.
