Gross site set for changes Cheryl Misurka Contributing Writer NORTH Vancouver City council voted unanimously Monday in favour of a new develop- ment on the cor- ner of West Ist Street and Chesterfield Avenue. The = development will mix modern with heritage design. Gross House, a 1904 heritage house located at 83 Chesterfield Avenue will be moved off-site, restored to its original condition and moved back to its original site after a new office building, is built around its foundation. The house will then be used as a restaurant. A new contemporary five-storey office build- ing with an underground parking Jot will replace a two-level parkade, which is currently beside the heritage house. With the first phase of construction to begin in about six months, architect Fred Adab of F. Adab Architects Inc. assured council and the public that the project is consistent with the city’s Official Community Plan. The building entrance, at the corner of Ist Street and Chesterfield Avene, will lead into the main floor, entirely devoted to retail. The floors above will be offices. Don Luxton, the heritage consultant for the project, has inspected the heritage house. Said Luxton, “I am confident of our-.ability to restore it to its original condition.” He added there is a surprising amount of orig- inal structural material in the house, including the roof structure. The plan also includes landscaping in front of and around Gross House to heighten the development’s appeal. Following no public discussion and only brief questions from council concerning the development’s impact on the surrounding neighbourhood and the integrity of the heritage restoration, council unanimously approved the new develop- HIGH FLYING NAVIHAWK ment.
