Eco-Chaliengers | Morocco-bound A local team of four fit folk is one of 57 that are currently making their way to Marrakech to take part in the 1998 Eco-Challenge. Sponsored by the Discovery Channel, the Eco-Challenge is a gruclling 11-day race over 500 kilometres of ev changing Moraccon terrain ~ from parched desert to high alpine; from fra- grant meadows to rock-rimmed canyons. For the past few months, three local men have been training hard for the race. Bob Faulkner, Rob Hartvikson and Dave Norona are three-fourths of ‘Team AT&T. Just fast month the fourth member of the team had to pull out due to a foot injury suffered while rock climbing. RCMP officer Marion Craig, 37, was called in as a substitute and two days ago the team left for Morocco. At age 50, Faulkner is the the oldest competitor in the field. Norona, of North Vancouver, is a 2 r-old extreme athlete and journalist, and 42-year-old Hartvi a West Van banker. The Eco-Challenge race bilis itself as one of the roughest long-distance team events in the world. It is surely the most diverse. Participants will use a number of means of travel, including their own feet, bicycles, kayaks, fixed ropes, horses and, fittingly for the camels.
