Fred Williams’ troubles with his two sens began back in 1994 when he decided to: marry his second wife, Katalin Lamour. Lamour was 49 years old, Williams was 87 when they met in late 1993. Williams’ first wite Anna died in 1982 atter appros- imately 40. years of marriage. Lamour was a tenant t Willlams* Bellevue apartment building knew cach other for a few months when Williams announced § to his sons that he was contemplating marriage. The marriage took place secretly on June 4, 1994, Between othe time — that Williams expressed his inten: tions to: marry Lamour and the actual wedding, Willivnis® sons, both accountants in their 50s, arranged an “estate plan” for their elderly father. According toa B.C. Supreme court decision, the sons were worried about the potential for misunderstanding as to the extent to. which Lamour might seek to share in the family assets. The Williams family was described as a close, loving one that worked together and were concerned about cach other's welfare “at feast until mid 1994." The nightmare began for the North Vancouver man after he and his wite Angela bought their dream house at 1664 Birchlynn PL in 1991, ¢ months later ever-widening cracks appeared i a the walls of the house, which backs on to Lynn Creek, and the couple's four-vear-long strug: gle to extricate themselves trom the $238,000 money pit started. “We had cracks running through the garden and the house,” Playle, a bulk-loader operator on the North Vancouver docks. His first step was to go to North Vancouver District to find out why his house seemed to be sinking down the dope toward Lyna Creek. The district hired a consulting engincering, company and it was discovered the house had recalled been built on an abandoned gravel pit. The 1994 study, performed by SRK-Robinson Inc. consulting engineers, stated that “while considerable acking of the slab and interior walls of the house has occurred, no evidence of signiticant movement of the slope has been observed that could be related to the damage to the house.” Small comfort to the Playtes. Left with worsening damage to their home ided to take on the district. after much haggling, and atter a small claims court date was set, the c's insurance agent, the Municipal Insurance Association (MIA), paid 300,000 tor the house.
