WHEN planning a nice relaxing
vacation, never drive through
the desert.

Inevitably your car
will break down and a
psychopath will pick you
up, thus setting offa
chain of deadly events.

We've seen it done to
death in such dusty flicks
as Kalifornia,
Breakdown, and Love a
#5, but nowhere as origi-
nally as in director Paul
Chart’s American
Perfekt,

Sandra (C thart’s real-lite wite Amanda
Plummer) is on route to pick up her
flaky sister Alice when she is sccmingly
run off the road by a suspicious dirt-
covered station wagon. Her knight on a
white horse appears in the form of a
criminal psychiatrist in a Jag.

Sandra, tired of the mundane, is
instantly attracted to Jake (recent Best
Supporting Actor-nominee Robert
Forster), who shuns responsibility by

letting the flip of a coin decide his every
move.

Such a coin toss leads Jake to Alice
(Fairuza Balk), who is now wondering
about her overdue sister's whereabouts.

Is she that dead woman back in
the motel room or is she really
in the trunk of the car? The
supposedly aimless Alice proves
f more savy than her sister and
D decides to find out.
The dialogue benween Alice and
f Jake is sharp and at times funny,
setting American Derfekt apart
trom other road theiller movies.

The whole cast is great. OF

note is David Thewlis as

Santini, the doomed con man,
The only disappointment is Paul
Sorvino as the sheriff —- an uninspired
role for such a good actor.

The desert is an untorgiving Jand-
scape and the crazies are waiting like
vultures for new blood to happen by.
It’s a well-flogged plot line by this time
but Chart keeps our interest up with
fresh dialogue and some unexpected
plot twists, including the uncertain end-
ing. How does it end?
