Transit sparks fight From page 1 newly stormed Greater Vancouver Transit Authority. The vote on the trans: portation issue will be held this Friday. “Pm going to keep an open mind,” stated Maver Par Boname when Coun. Russ Fraser asked her specifically to carry out council's directions. “T have to make my own deet- sion and T will do thar on Friday morning.” West Vancouver- Capilano MILA Jeremy Dalton attended the meeting and asked Boname why she was taking this stance when she “clearly made a decision (last week) as to how (she) would be vor- ing?” Boname answered: “Well, | took it (council’s motion) as advice, which [certainly appreciae. And as I said, | will listen to everything that is going on (atthe GVRD meet- ing). [I was ciected mayor of this municipality by quite a substantial majority, and I know it rankles some people, but I do tend to make my own decisions.” Boname's attempt to re- exert her power caused even more sparks te fly when she accused Coun. Russ Fraser of taking “cheap shots” in pub- lic. ; “1 provided you with mate- rial thar we could have dis- cussed at any time,” she said. “I appreciate council’s help and I also would appreciate the kind of discussion that took place now to gike place on a one-to-one basis.” . Fraser responded by saying that he wasn’t “picking” on her ard that he was opposed to closed-door discussions. “I think that’ we should discuss things in’ council in front of the public every time, net you and me talking in your office. 1] was just. asking vou to do what vou said vou would do (and vote as direct: ed)” he said. Coun. Vietor Durman questioned the motive behind the mavor’s show of force. “T would hope vou would listen ca us (council) betore you listen to a group) of municipalities who've gota different agenda,” he said. He reminded Boname that she was recently re-instated by council as West) Vancouver's GVRD representative with the provision that she tollow council’s dircetions. “We're the elected body and vou should be taking your instruction from us,” he said. Durman then suggested that the mayor's unprecedent- ed move might have dire con- sequences. “You are our representa- tive. You have a motion from this council and I think that you will be treading very dan- gerous waters if you go against counceil’s wish on this matter,” he said. But Boname said the legal opinion she obtained says oth- erwise: “The motion (to vote against the proposal) does not fetter my discretion. I am still not beund by your decisions. I’m nor saying that I won't...” But Durman_ interrupted, saying: “Pve fought, and Councillor Fraser has and Councillor Williams has, hour upon hour, to beat this (trans- portation issue). “And to have you sit there and say that you may vote in favor of it seems to be a slap in the face for this council and the electorate that put you where you are.” Grouse search cut shi Anna Marie D’Angelo News Reporter dangeloansnews.com THE North Shore Rescue Team was called out at 5 a.m. on Tuesday after two Irish tourists were reported missing on Grouse Mountain.
