OVER the years vio- lence has grown more popular on TV shows and in movies, Are kids getting the wrong . ideas? . ; * When I was a kid, I -. watched cutesy little cartoons _-with pleasant thoughts and “happy endings like Carebears, 7 Muppet Babses and The Get * Along Gang. There were a _ few shows with some violence like G.I. Joe; HeMan, and Shera, and they weren't that shader . Sure; we had cartoons where anvils dropped out of * the sky arid animals could ;.. talk, We all knew it wasn’t real. Nowadays kids watch artoons like’ X-men, and Batman, where the characters . by TV violence from a twelve-storey build- ing. Kids could actually try these stunts out, Violence sells and the companies try to fit it into every show. The Simpsons devoted a whole episode to this issue. When the baby started to mimic what she saw on The Itchy & Scratchy show, the show was changed to feature no violence. Everyone stopped watching it, so they put violence back into the show, That one episode made a couple of points. First, that kids try to do what they sce on TV and see- ondly, that kids want to see violence in their shows, Kids also watch TV shows “ Violence on TV and in movies is glori- fied and that is why people tend to take out their aggression in such a mali- - ‘cious way. ” like Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, where real people ‘portray super-heroes who use violence to defeat the bad . guys. This TV show is send- ‘Ing a message to the kids that fighting is good and if you _ do what they do, you won’t get hurt. - When. kids grow out of cartoons they get to stay up dater. These cartoons were more alistic than dropping pianos Those warning signs before a show, “Not suitable for young viewers,” are not going to make them change the channel. [t makes them more curious. Most of these shows are police programs that indicate violence can help solve the issue. When kids go to watch a movie at the theatre, they encounter the age restric tions. [t does not mean that they are not going to sce the movie, It just means that they could wait a few months and it would be available on video. One thing I can’t under- stand is why the Power Ranger movie was rated PG, This means kids must see it with an adult. Yet on TV there is no rating and kids park themselves in front of the television with no hesita- tion. I don’t understand how violence can be called enter- tainment. | It’s a shame that people like to watch such graphic details of supposedly civilized people causing pain to one another. It makes you won- der about the people around you, and people you hear about on the news. It seems that even if you get past all the TV programs and movies, there is still the news, ; Violence on TV and in movies is glorified and that is why people tend to take out - their aggression in such a malicious way. If we stopped glorifying it, would there be so much violence on the news? T have made a decision that when I have kids I will watch TV with them. I will screen the movies before let- ting them sce them. Children are being desen- sitized to violence through » Go Wireless for °25°*/mo. and get a Premium Pager for just *9° a month.
