PET CLINIC by Dr. Jeff Grognet and Dr. Louise Janes Christmas and Your Pet With the Christmas season upon us, we tend to indulge ourselves and our pets in a little spoiling. Unfortunately, allowing our pets to consume too many Christmas treats can be dangerous. Turkey “toxicity” is the most significant Christmas problem. Dogs unaccustomed to rich food can’t handle a sudden change in diet. If they feast too much at Christmas, they can get severe gastric ailments (inflammation of the stomach and intestines) which cause vomiting & diarrhea. Recovery may take several days. {n some pets, the situation progresses to full-blown pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), which can be fatal. Pets require intravenous fluids and medication to combat the disease. Hospitalization may be required for a prolonged period of time. Chocolate delicacies also pose as a danger to your pet. Chocolate contains a toxin called theobromine. Though pure-bred Siberian Husky, 1 yr, female, spayed PETS LTD. Butch & Missy . Poodles, neutered & spayed WV SPCA German Shep / Border Collie, poisoning does not occur commonly, dogs that consume large quantities at one time can suffer from vomiting and nervous signs. The size of the dog and the type of chocolate are important factors in determining if toxicity will occur. Each year, several pets die because owners aren't aware of the risks. The Christmas tree is also a hazard to pets. Cats love to play amongst the ornaments and some have the nasty habit of eating tinsel. Tinsel itself is not toxic, however, the sharp edges can cut the lining of the intestine. Surgery is required to remove tinsel, ‘Prevention is easy - use popcorn or garland instead of tinsel. Christmas tree lights are also a concern. Dogs, and particularly rabbits, will readily chew on exposed cords and get e!ecirocuted. Always hide the power cord under some tape or pull it up, out of reach. We hope you and your pets enjoy a happy and safe Christmas. 1 yr, male, neutered PETS LTD.
