By Carol Crenna Contributing Writer This is the first time that the col- lege has offered a full fashion course load in its extension pro- gram, which provides you with instruction in start-to-finish clothing construction. Basic sewing skills are required for the six courses which comprise the non-credit certificate program. They include French Pattern Drafting and Designing, Garment Construction, Tailoring. French Draping, Couture Detailing. and Fashion Hlustration, which include a full 140 hours of training. Kian Samet, who teaches all of the sewing courses, has had much experience in the field. She trained in Iran, Europe and Canada and has been active in the fashion industry in Vancouver since 1977. Her enthusiasm for design, and . fashion in general, is refreshing. and her contagious energy is shown in her work as a couturier in her own studio, as a guest lecturer and teacher at universities and colleges. and as a representative travelling to international fashion houses. Samet says she loves every aspect of fashion and recalls that one of the high points of her career occurred last year when she was in Paris. She was invited to take an inside look at the House of Christian Dior. where she was given a tour of the workrooms and discussed the industry. with the “Premiere of the House,” Madame Elizabeth. Q: How should I keep my sweaters looking new? © If the care label recommends at-home washing, read and follow the instructions careful- ly. When the care label reads “dryclean only”, take your sweater to a drycleaner. Point out any spots or stains which may require special treat- ment. Some trims can be difficult to dean. When you purchase a garment with trim, ask about the Tetailer's return policy. if there's any doubt about care procedures ask your drycleaner to pre-test a small area to determine how it will clean. If a problem occurs in the care process, the ganrent should be retumed to the retailer for a refund. The classes will run simultane- ously in both English and Farsi, which Samet is confident will work because the course is substantially visual with hands-on experience. She states that Jranian women generally have an innate sense of style and fashion and could become very good al creating their own gar- ments. This is primarily because they traditionally prefer to have clothing custom made rather than buying it off the rack. Program coordinator Lynn Jest feels this is a breakthrough for the college since it has never offered a regular course in a language other than English. “This has given us an opportuni- ty to reach out to a greater percent- age of the community, offering a non-credit course to those who may not have applied previously because of a language barrier.” in the program, Samet will teach a combination of two methods of Parisian design, called Gerlain and Esmode. Students will start with an intro- duction to drafting, io learn how to make basic pattern blocks for a bodive. skirt. pant leg and sleeve used to create lots of different clothing styles. They'll fearn couture construc- lion techniques and finishes to make garments look professionally sewn and impeccably pressed. Students will also learn how to draw the design ideas that are in their heads, to enable them to create a pattern and turn those ideas into wearable clothing.
