All trails fead to town this fall as more and more women are making a fashion statement with the mountain look. In fact, the hiking influence has become so prevalent that a new breed of urban hiker is donning mountain gear just to look the Part. Purchases of hiking equipment have more than doubled over the past three years, according to a national sporting goods associa- tion, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that people are hitting the trails en masse. . Whether dressing for comfort to trek through suburbia or carrying a backpack in the name of fash- ion, these urban hikers have no intention of making it to the mountains.
