BCSTA funding brief

District 44 School Board
(NVSB) ‘‘generaily’? en-
dorsed the B.C. School
Trustees Association’s
(BCSTA) brief to the
Education Funding Review
Panel (EFRP) Sept. 8 at its
first meeting of the 1992-93
school year.

On June 3, 1992, the provincial
education ministry announced the
formation of the EFRP “‘... which
will undertake an independent
review of the public education
funding system.”’

The panel will submit its report
to the ministry in November.

The BCSTA, an umbrella group
representing B.C. school boards,
responded by soliciting input from
its member boards in the formn of

The NVSB chose to generally
endorse the brief (as opposed to
fully endorsing it) because of a
criterion that calls for recognition
of “flexibility for boards in
delivering core programs and ad-
ding locally based options which
reflect community values,’ but
does not recognize the need for
exceeding government-imposed
spending caps.

Last April, the NVSB informed
the BCSTA of its intention to
withdraw as a member of the
association.

According to board chairman
Richard Walton, the organization
doesn’t serve the NVSB as well as
it serves other communities.

The BCSTA has yet to contact
the local board about its decision
to withdraw.
