lands major

to improve
irrigation

in Pakistan

A NORTH Vancouver
company will help B.C.
Hydro build a major irriga-
tion and electrical energy
project for Pakistan.

B.C. Hydro international Lid.
(BCHIL), a consulting enginecring
subsidiary of B.C. Hydro, recently
signed a five-year, $5-million con-
tract with Ottawa-based Interna-
tional Development Research to
improve water use for Pakistan’s
irrigation system and enhance
electrical energy production in
that country.

North Vancouver-based Via-Sat
Data Systems Inc., which has in-
stalled and continues to service
much of Hydro’s existing system,
will provide technical assistance
on the project.

The project involves the in-
stallation of approximately 30
data collection platforms in the
Himalayan and Karakoram moun-
tains at elevations up to 5,000
metres.

Via-Sat Data Systems, located
at 90 Harbor Ave., has been bas-
ed in North Vancouver since June
1988 and has a staff of seven.

Company president Paul Roc-
chetti is a former B.C. Hydro
employee.and the Crown corpora-
tion is now Via-Sat’s major cus-
tomer.

The company specializes in en-
vironmental data collection and
also performs snow course
measurements and collects data
for glacier, hydrometric and sed-
imentation field surveys.

BCHIL, key Hydro staff and
private Canadian consultants will
work on the project. Hydro uses a
similar remote meteorofogical data
collection system in various
mountain locations and river
basins around the province.

Out of the total budget, nearly
$2 million is for Canadian
salaries. Most of the remaining
money will be used to purchase
equipment and services through
B.C. suppliers.

When installed, the platforms
will record and transmit informa-
tion on precipitation, temperature,
snow accuinulation, wind, solar
radiation and relative humidity.

The information will be trans-
mitted several times per day to a
receiving station in Lahore by sat-
ellite or meteorburst, which in-
volves the bouncing of radio
signals off icnization trails formed
by meteorites entering the Earth’s
atmosphere.

Using a hydrologic model, the
data will be used to establish more
reliable inflow predictions. The
information will allow Pakistan’s
irrigation systems, the largest in
the world, and hydroelectric
generating systems in the country
to be operated more efficiently.

Staff from the Water and
Power Development Authority in
Pakistan will be brought to
Canada for training and direct
participation in the system’s
design.
