There’s cannibalism, flayed cor- pses and the pits of human madness, but, believe it or not, it’s . done tastefully in this terrifying adaption of Thomas Harris’ bestseller. Dr. Hannibal ‘the Cannibal’ Lector (Anthony Hopkins) may be at the top of the food chain, but he is also in the lowest cell in a hespital for the criminally insane. He can’t indulge his passion lock- ed behind safety glass in the seriously deranged ward. Well, not lately anyway. Not since that regrettable incident at the hospital when Lector faked an illness and a nurse leaned over and ... but | digress. Her high intelligence and exac- ting professionalism (even the kitlers are addressed as ‘‘sir’’) make her a tough adversary, but she’s not without a few childhood demons of her own. It’s a gutsy performance of emotion and strength. And she certainly needs it against Anthony Hopkins, who manages to be compellingly repulsive. He is a polished coil of brutal savagery, and the most frightening psycho since Norman Bates. Like Hitchcock, director Jonathan Demme creates real ten- sion, not cheap thrills. The horror is not in the glimpses of partially skinned corpses, but in the depths of inhumanity. There’s a real aura of sorrow for the victims, rare in terror filrns. Not only is Silence of the Lambs thoroughly unnerving, it’s thoughtfully executed. It is quite simply the best thriller in years. It's a funny, compassionate and sometimes frightening look at a brothel as a university student re- evaluates her worth during a fong evening with an endless stream of quirky johns. Although somewhat graphic, the sex is more business than erotic and the encounters reveal much more about the well-acted charac- ters than their bodies.
