I thought that this number was confidential and I only had to give it to govern- ment agencies. Do I have to give it to these other people? Answer: Tax legislation in- troduced in September 1988 made it mandatory toa provide your social insurance number (SIN) to anyone who prepares an income information slip on your behalf. This could include your employer, bank, credit union or other finan- cial institution that pay: you in- terest, or a corporation if you receive dividends. If you fail to supply your SIN to any of these, you are liable for a fine of $100. You do not have to supply your SIN to anyone else. The people who prepare the slips which show how much you have earned during the year are tequired by law to make reason- able effort to obtain your social insurance number. If they do not, they are liable for a $100 fine. When they ask for your SIN, the information slip preparer is simply complying with federal legislation. They must have your SIN for the reporting of any interest you earn in a year on interest-bearing che- quing or savings accounts, GICs, or if you recieve income from a trust or mutual fund.
