Protect kids from sun

THE WEEK of May 7 to 13 has
been declared Sun Safety
Awareness Week in Canada by the
Canadian Dermatology Associa-
tion.

Here are some specific steps you
can take to help protect your
children from the sun:

¢ Minimize sun exposure. Dam-
age caused by the sun accumulates
over the course of a lifetime. One
severe childhood or adolescent
sunburn doubles the risk of devel-

oping skin cancer later in life.

© Examine your children’s skin
regularly for any changes in moles,
freckles or skin discolorations.

® Sunscreens are not recom-
mended for babies under six
months of age. Total sun
avoidance is best. Keep infants
under one year of age out of direct
sun, using a covered carriage,
cradle, or sun umbrella.

© Beware of reflected light from
water, sand, cement, or snow.
