~~ me 48 - Sunday, February 4, 1990 - North Shore News THE FITNESS industry has never been in better shape, ac- cording to local fitness guru Ron Zalko, who has just finished spending mega bucks to pump up his North Van- couver facility. Zalko has dished out $700,000 and bought a host of electronic fitness toys to house in his health club located in the former Interna- tional Plaza Hotel on Marine Drive. He has also expanded the facility by 15,000 square feet by moving into what once was a piano lounge and restaurant. That area now serves as Zalko’s new body building area, which in- cludes the latest in computerized fitness machines, including rowing machines, bicycle machines and equipment to measure heart strength. And, according to Zalko, it is the residents of the North Shore who are to thank for making 1989 his best year ever. *“*We've had the biggest year we've ever had. The North Shore people have really supported us a lot. I was amazed at the amount of support we have received,’ said Zalko. ‘Fitness is in and fitness is going to stay.”" Zalko said he was wanting to set up a body building area for quite some time and had been waiting to take over the former piano lounge and restaurant for the past 18 months. In addition to housing his new body building area, the newly- renovated area will soon include a day-care facility where parents can drop off their children while they burn off some pounds, as well as a separate steam and sauna area for men and women. And Zalko says a new entrance, just off Mariné Drive in front of the office and apartment complex, will make his North Vancouver health club easier to find. Bart Nygard Jr., a 19-year-old business marketing student, is the owner of Canadian Cape Cod Classics and is in the business of selling Cape Cod style chairs, tables and loveseats made from 100 per cent cedar, All the products come in kit form and the pieces are precut, presanded and predrilled. “Sales have been very good for my products and | would fike to find a wholesaler for them. There is a lot of room for a middleman,”* said Nygard. He adds that the kits fit together compactly and that a chair will take ‘‘the average person’’ one hour to put together. Nygard said his design was taken from an original Cape Cod (Adirondack) chair made from Fine or fir. **We redesigned it to our liking, changing angles and seat stats, but keeping the traditional style, mak- ing it lower and curved in the back for greater relaxation and sun,’’ said Nygard. ‘‘The chairs have the original] large wide arms to set your drink or plate onto.” Nygard adds that there are sev- eral different applications for the chairs. “The real charm about these chairs are they enable you to discover your personal approach through design, thus making them truly your own,"’ said Nygard, who added that because his pro- ducts are made from cedar, they are “environmentally friendly.”’ Nygard said the design of the chair is ‘‘coming more and more into vogue, enabling it to maintain its spot in the market."
